Xi'an has always been a place for business and trade since the days when it was Chang'an, capital of many ancient empires. Today, Xi'an is still the largest commercial hub and entrepot of materials in northwest China.
In the early days of the 1990s, commerce and trade-oriented policy was adopted to develop market economy. Four levels of commercial activities were developed. Xi'an has 100,000 various commercial outlets with an average of 15.2 outlets serving every one thousand residents. The newly emerged chain operations are on the rise rapidly as more than four hundred chain stores offer a diverse collection of commodities.
The main commercial centers in Xi'an mainly locate in Jiefang Road, the East Street and the South Street. The big department stores and various monopolistic shops are located there.  The East Street
The East Street is a traditional shopping center. It develops a busy street as the development of the city. From the Kaiyuan Shopping Mall and Xi'an Century Golden Flower Shopping Mall in the west to the Parkson Shopping Mall in the east, there are many famous brands' shops, small shops and shopping malls. You can buy almost everything you want to buy in this street.
Shuyuan Gate
If you come to Xi'an, you should not lose the chance to go the Shuyuan Gate. There is a quaint culture street here. You can enjoy the deep culture here. There are more than 100 shops here. The sell many things such as rubbings of stone tablets, imitations of famous people's calligraphy and painting, seals, the four treasures of the study, Leather Silhouette Show, Paper-cuts,Peasant Painting , Painted Clay Figurines, Appliqué Articles, imitation of Tri-colored Glazed Pottery of the Tang Dynasty, the petit -point work, reproduction of the Qin Terracotta Figures, and so on.
