Xian is located in the middle of the Yellow River valley and at the center of the Central Shaanxi Plain. It is surrounded by the Weihe River in the north and the Qinling Mountain Range in the south.The Central Shaanxi Plian ranges from Baoji city in the west to the Yellow River in the east. The plain is well-known as the "800-mile Grain Basin" because it has become a corn production base of Shaanxi Province as well as the nation's bases of wheat, oil-bearing crops and cotton. The Weihe River and its tributies flowed in the vicinity of the city, so ,it was known as "a city surrounded by eight rivers". It is 9983 square kilometers in total with municipal area of 826 square kilometers.
