Situated at the northern foot of Mount Zhongnan, a long range of peaks with lush green forests, Louguantai occupies the most
ideal site for the practice of the Taoist religion, with clear streams in the canyons and a tranquil environment. No wonder
it is reputed as the "Luckiest Place in the World". As legend has it, during the Spring and Autumn Period, Yi Xi, an official
of the Hangu Pass, built a hut here to welcome Lao Zi to come to Guanzhong on his western trip. Here, Lao Zi, wrote the Tao
De Jing, or the Book of Ethnics running five thousand characters and built a platform on a high hill south of the hut to
preach Taoist ideas. The hallowed spot had undergone extensions and repairs form the Qin to Qing Dynasties. Especially a
great deal of construction was carried out during the Tang Dynasty. Numerous renowned men of letters like Ouyang xun, Wang
Wei, Li Bai, Bai Juyi and Su Shi visited here and left poems and inscriptions on paper or stone. It is side that " there are
two famous places on the Guanzhong Plan with Mount Zhongnan being the most famous, with its thousand towering peaks. And
among them, Louguan Tai is the most renowned spot". Some historic sites have survived the ages, including the preaching
platform, the Immortality-pill Furnace, Lu Dongbin's Cave, the Beauty Spring, Louguan Pagoda, Lao Zi's Tomb, the Holy
Ancestor's Palace, Huiling Temple, the Yuhua Temple and the Yansheng Temple.
Louguan Tai National Forest Park
Louguan Tai Temple is situated south of Qinling Mountain Range and north of the Weihe River. Bamboo groves spread like a
green blanket over the hillside. It enjoys the name of "an abode of immortals", and establishes itself as a scenically
beautiful resort.
Louguan Tai is famous not only for its historical remains, but also for its beautiful forest landscape. It is surrounded by
green hills and pure waters. Bamboo trees are verdant and luxuriant. It ranks first in the area of Qinling Mountain Range for
vegetation vigor. It is characterized by crisscross valleys and hills, complicated tectonics and variegated organisms. It
boasts more than 120 tree varieties and 30 rare animal species such as the giant panda and the golden-haired monkey. The park
began to take shape in 1982 when the State Council decided to build a national forest park here.
The park occupies an area of 1,592 acres. Within its precincts, there are grotesque peaks, deep and secluded valleys,
towering old trees, and shady bamboo groves. Vertical distribution is the distinctive feature of its forest. Up to this day,
it has developed into a unique tourist attraction with both natural and artificial features in Shaanxi Province, taking both
natural and human elements as an integral whole.
