The Hukou Water falls of the Yellow River is the only Yellow Waterfall on earth.
It is the second largest waterfall in China, which is located 165 kilometers to the west of Fenxi City, Shanxi Province, and 50 kilometers to the east of Yichuan, Shaanxi Province. it is, however, the largest waterfall on the Yellow River.
At this point, the bed of the river abruptly turns narrow, forming a shape like a pot mouth (the Chinese for which is "Hukou"), hence its name. The water falls over a precipice more than 30 meters deep, which is a spectacular scene. The waterfall has a descent of 15-20 meters in the low-water season, but it is scarcely noticeable as a waterfall in the high -water season when the waters burst into rapid torrents。
The most dramatic changes occur during the deep winter and early spring when the river surface is frozen. Sometimes the subsidiary falls freeze to form icicles, creating images of "crouching beasts" on top of the cliffs.
Standing on the bank of the Yellow River, people can see the roaring water rushing through mountains and then plunging into a deep pool, really resembling the boiling water in a teapot. The waves stir up masses of smoke and clouds, rising higher up into the sky, with the color changes from yellow to gray and then to blue. The local people call this marvelous scenery smoke rising from the water. On the 50-yuan bank note there is a picture of the roaring Hukou Waterfall.
Beneath the waterfall is Qilangwo Bridge connecting two provinces, Shanxi and Shaanxi. In the sunshine, the mist is refracted by sunlight to create a rainbow spanning over the water like a colorful bridge.
The Yijin Village near the waterfall is said to be the place where Yu the great started his family. He started his work of bringing the Yellow River under control by dredging the Hukou waterfall. Legend has it that for three times he was so busy that he passed his own home without entering. Sites about his work are still seen today. Besides, other tourist attractions as Mengmen Mountain and Yellow River Bridge are also open to public.
