Shaanxi History Museum

Shaanxi History Museum, which located in the northwest of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda of ancient city Xi'an, is the first huge state museum with modern facilities In China, and given the reputation of "bright pearl of ancient city, treasure house of China." The museum has an area of 65,000 square meters, building place 56,000 square meters, cultural relics storerooms of 8,000 square meters。Its architecture demonstrates the vigor and profundity of the Tang Dynasty while modern technology and new materials are extensively applied.

Collected in the museum are more than 370,000 cultural relics, roughly 800 of which have been rated as first-class national relics and 18 as national-class treasures. The halls cover an area of more than 10,000 square meters and extend over 2,000 meters.
It is divided into three sections: the permanent display, the temporary display and special theme display.

The permanent display hall is in the preface hall. The giant lion in the center was originally erected in front of Shun ling Mausoleum, the tomb of Empress Wu Zetian's mother of the Tang Dynasty. With its exquisite craftsmanship and imposing appearance, the lion is believed to rank the first in Asia. In the hall, over 3,000 items ranges from the Lantian Man of 1.1 million years ago to the year of 1840. the following items and categories are perhaps the most outstanding representative: the bronzes from the Shang to the Zhou Dynasties; items symbolizing ethnic assimilation and the development of agriculture, Handicrafts, animal husbandry and urban construction from the Qin and Han dynasties; tomb frescos, tricolor pottery, and gold and silver jewelry from the Tang Dynasty; ceramics from the Song Dynasty, and the seven-colored pottery figurines of the Ming Dynasty. The “bamboo-sectioned copper fumigator covered with gold and silver” dating back to the Han Dynasty is an extremely rare treasure. The Dugu xin multisided seal set dating back to the South and North Dynasties is the only one of its kind ever on display in China. The “agate cup with a gold bull head” was a funeral item found in an ancient coffin. The agate body is as thin and flimsy as paper, as if it would fall into pieces with the slightest touch. This treasured cup is a living evidence of the openness and the extensive cultural exchanges with the West during the Tang Dynasty.

The special theme display hall is on the western side of the preface hall. It covers an area of 2,500 square meters. It mainly holds many historical and cultural exhibitions with Shaanxi local cultural characteristics, Such as “Silk Road”, “the Exhibition of Yaozhou Porcelain “.

The temporary display hall is on the eastern side. It is the same size with the special theme display hall. It mainly holds some exhibitions temporarily about cultural exchanges between Chinese and other countries and about cultural relics from other cities and provinces.

With best display, excellent order, high quality service, elegant surrounding, and special charm, the museum attracted tourists home and abroad.
